A woman was left heartbroken after a DNA test her daughter took "for fun" uncovered a family secret that had been hidden for decades. What started as harmless curiosity turned into a life-changing discovery, leaving her questioning everything she thought she knew about her family.
Unexpected Italian Heritage
Sharing her story on Mumsnet, the woman explained that her daughter was the first to take an ancestry DNA test. When the results showed she was 25% Italian, the family initially assumed it was an error. She said: "I thought that's weird, that must mean one of her parents is half Italian." Wanting to solve the mystery, she took a DNA test herself. The results revealed she was 48% Italian – but that wasn't the biggest shock.
Half-Sisters Discovery
She also discovered that her two sisters, who had taken DNA tests several years earlier, were actually her half-sisters. The heartbreaking revelation suggested the man she had always believed to be her father was not her biological parent.
The woman explained that there was no way of getting answers, as her mother died two years ago, while the man who raised her passed away more than 30 years ago. Still trying to process the discovery, she admitted she wasn't sure what she hoped to gain by sharing her story, other than finding people who had experienced something similar.

Her post prompted an outpouring of support from others who had made unexpected discoveries through at-home DNA tests. One person commented: "Oh gosh what a shock. I’ve heard of this happening, there’s a podcast by the BBC called The Gift where people talk through similar experiences you’ve gone through if that might help. Hard when your parents have passed so you can’t get immediate answers."
Another user added: "Are any of your mother or father siblings alive? They might be able to provide you with information about your birth father. Can you find out where your mother was living at the time you were conceived. Must be such a shock to think that either your father that brought you up didn't know or that he did but accepted you with love."
A third user said: "It must be such a shock! I did the test last year and learned that my grand father is not my father's real father and that my ethnicity is different from what I thought as a result. Not a complete surprise for me though for reasons I won't go into, but my parents never told me. So many families have secrets like this. My father is dead so no opportunity to find out why this was kept hidden."
