Strictly Come Dancing professional Dianne Buswell has opened up about her challenging recovery following the birth of her first child, revealing she utilised an oxygen chamber just one week after welcoming her son. The 36-year-old dancer shared a candid glimpse into her new life as a mother through an extensive Instagram post on Sunday, documenting everything from night feeds to family walks.
A Week of Firsts and Recovery
Buswell and her partner, YouTube star Joe Sugg, 34, welcomed their baby boy named Bowden earlier this month. In her social media update, the Strictly star chronicled her first seven days of motherhood through fifteen numbered moments, providing fans with an intimate look at this transformative period.
Among the highlights she shared were the final hours of her pregnancy bump, the emotional homecoming decorated with balloons and flowers, and the reality of nighttime feeding sessions. Particularly notable was her eleventh point, which simply stated: "Recovery in the oxygen chamber" - indicating the intensity of her postpartum healing process.
Name Clarification and Family Tributes
The couple had previously confirmed their son's unusual name and its pronunciation shortly after announcing his birth. Buswell explained that "Bowden" should be pronounced with "Bow like How, not Bow like Row," ensuring fans understood the correct articulation.
Their son's full name - Bowden Mark Richard Sugg - pays tribute to both families. The middle name Mark honours Buswell's beloved father, while Richard commemorates Sugg's late grandfather who passed away in 2021. The baby was born on March 16, 2026, with Buswell captioning the birth announcement: "Never felt a love like it."
Strictly History and Pregnancy Journey
Buswell made television history last year by becoming the first pregnant professional dancer to compete on Strictly Come Dancing. She was partnered with Australian actor Stefan Dennis during the 2025 series, though the pair were forced to withdraw after Dennis sustained an injury.
At the time, Buswell quickly addressed speculation that her pregnancy might have been the real reason for their exit, firmly stating on Instagram: "Just to clarify as I have had lots of people msg me thinking this is a cover up for me being not able to dance!? Firstly we wouldn't lie especially about somebody being sick! And secondly I am fine, yes I am pregnant, but I'm also very capable and feeling really good!"
Production Preparations and Future Plans
Strictly producers had reportedly implemented contingency plans for Buswell's participation while pregnant, with the baby due in early 2026 and the show's final taking place in December 2025. A source revealed to The Sun that several professional dancers were prepared to step in if necessary, though the BBC's primary concern remained Buswell's health and wellbeing throughout the process.
The couple first announced their pregnancy in September with a creative video set to Elton John's "Tiny Dancer," featuring them painting together before revealing a drawing of two stick figures holding hands with a baby. They confirmed they were expecting a son due in 2026, with Sugg captioning the clip: "Our little baby boy ❤️ we cannot wait to meet you."
Adjusting to Parenthood
In her recent Instagram post, Buswell expressed gratitude toward her partner, writing: "Massive thank you to my Joey who has been looking after us so so well couldn't of done all this without ya." She also shared sweet moments of "Spring time walks with daddy" and described how "welcome cards are my fav and always make me emotional although that is not hard to do at the moment."
The dancer had hinted that their baby's arrival was imminent in February, posting a video montage that showed miniature versions of their belongings alongside the caption: "When 2 will soon become 3, the last one!" She had previously expressed her desire to become a mother in May, making her current journey into parenthood particularly meaningful.
Buswell and Sugg first sparked romance when paired together during the sixteenth series of Strictly Come Dancing in 2018. Their relationship has since blossomed, culminating in the birth of their first child and this new chapter of family life that Buswell is now openly sharing with her followers.
