Davina McCall Overcome with Emotion During Heart Radio Show After Son's Surprise

Television and radio presenter Davina McCall experienced a deeply emotional moment during a live broadcast this week, breaking down in tears after an unexpected on-air surprise from her co-host. The incident occurred on Heart Radio Breakfast, where McCall is currently filling in for Amanda Holden alongside presenter Jamie Theakston.

The Emotional On-Air Moment

What began as a routine morning show took an emotional turn when Theakston surprised McCall with a message displayed on her studio screen. After welcoming her back to the program and noting how good it was to have her in the studio, Theakston encouraged McCall to read a message that had come in for her.

"Read it out," Theakston prompted, to which McCall responded with visible shock: "Oh no." She began reading "'Hi mum,'" before pausing, overcome with emotion, and turning to her co-host in disbelief.

"It's Chester and Lara [his partner]," she continued through tears. "It's my son." Urged by Theakston to continue, she read the complete message: "'We're sending love and tuning in.'"

McCall added, still emotional: "No, but wait, do you know where he is? He's in Vietnam." Her son Chester, 19, is currently traveling in Vietnam with his partner Lara.

Co-Host's Reaction and Recovery

Addressing McCall's teary display, Theakston told listeners: "Bless him. Uh oh, I've done it, I've set her off already. I promised there'll be no tears today and yet look at that, it's 7:03am and she's crying already."

As McCall wiped away tears, Theakston briefly moved the show along by reading competition terms and conditions, allowing her a moment to compose herself. McCall soon reassured listeners: "Okay, I'm back in the room."

"Well done Chester by the way," Theakston added. "Great job on mum," to which McCall replied: "I love you," still visibly moved by the surprise.

McCall's Family Background

Davina McCall shares three children with her ex-husband Matthew Robertson: Chester, 19, Holly, 24, and Tilly, 22. The former couple were married for 17 years before announcing their separation in 2017.

McCall has since found love again with hairdresser Michael Douglas, whom she married last year. Speaking about their wedding on an episode of their podcast Making The Cut, she described it as "the best day of my life."

"I've loved giving birth to my kids, but this was different," McCall explained. "This was a different thing. A beautiful, very, very small and intimate event. Very private."

Her spouse added: "It was a brilliant day, wasn't it? Pretty private. We managed to keep it quite private."

Recent Health Challenges and Outlook

McCall has credited her partner with supporting her through two significant health challenges in recent years: a benign brain tumor and breast cancer. Reflecting on how these experiences have changed her perspective, she shared her current priorities.

"Do you know what I really want to do? I want to destress my life and I want to detoxify my life," McCall said. "I mean I was already a clean eater, I'm nauseatingly clean, I exercise, I do all of those things but I want to get negativity out of my life, so I've changed my algorithm on my phone."

To achieve this, McCall explained that she deleted any social media accounts that made her feel sad or angry, opting instead for more uplifting content such as "puppies and babies."

Regarding her current health status, McCall added: "I had a check yesterday, I also get scaniety [anxiety over scans] and they were also very pleased to tell me that there was nothing there."

The emotional radio moment highlights the strong family bonds that remain important to McCall despite her busy career and recent personal challenges, demonstrating how even seasoned broadcasters can be moved by personal connections during their professional work.
