A video posted on TikTok by the account @kirbyestate shows a Dalek with an England flag wrapped around it, singing the iconic chorus to the 1996 anthem 'Three Lions' in its robotic voice. The clip, set to the Doctor Who theme tune, was filmed on the Kirby Estate in southeast London, widely known as one of England's most patriotic estates for its display of St George's Cross flags and murals celebrating sports stars.
Unlikely Fan Before the Match
The Dalek was seen before England's World Cup match against Mexico, which England won 3-2 to advance to the quarter-finals. The video shows the Dalek in front of a mural of England midfielder Eberechi Eze, who grew up near the estate, continuing the 'it's coming home' chant. It also had a replica of the Jules Rimet trophy on its head and took a shot at a goal, prodding the ball past a young goalkeeper.
The caption on the video reads: 'Keeper should have done better!!' The TikTok account regularly showcases the lively displays and community spirit on the estate.
England's World Cup Journey
England beat Mexico 3-2 in the round of 16, with two goals from Jude Bellingham in as many minutes and a third from Harry Kane, despite Mexico playing on home turf. Pubs stayed open until 5am for the celebration. England's next match is on Saturday evening in Miami against Norway in the quarter-final, kicking off at 10pm GMT, broadcast live on ITV1 and ITVX. Norway's star striker Erling Haaland is expected to pose a significant threat.
The Dalek's TV Legacy
Daleks first appeared in Doctor Who in 1963 and have become iconic British TV villains, known for their pepper-pot design and battle cry of 'Exterminate!' The 'Three Lions' song, written by David Baddiel and Frank Skinner and performed by the Lightning Seeds, was first released ahead of Euro 1996 and has become a common chant for England matches.
