Tom Cruise and Anne Hathaway are set to star in a sequel to the 1990 film Days of Thunder, nearly four decades after the original release. Cruise, 64, will reprise his role as Nascar driver Cole Trickle, while Hathaway, 43, will play a team owner and engineer in the upcoming follow-up.
Sequel Details and Release Date
The sequel is scheduled to hit cinemas on June 2, 2028, and will be filmed for Imax. The film will be directed by Warm Bodies filmmaker Jonathan Levine and co-produced by Cruise, Top Gun's Jerry Bruckheimer, and Tommy Harper, with a script by Will Staples.
In a newly released teaser trailer, the actors appeared on a race track before revealing a bright green and yellow car with the words “Days of Thunder coming 2028.”

Cruise says: “Now what?” Hathaway, who is pregnant with her third child, replies: “Now what? Let’s make the movie … I’m gonna have the baby, and then we’re gonna make the movie.”
Cruise said: “That’s a good idea. You have the baby, then we’ll go make the movie. We’re coming out summer of 2028. Don’t be late.” Hathaway joked: “Are you sure you want to go with that?” Cruise said: “I don’t know. I’m trying.”
Original Film Background
The original film was directed by the late Tony Scott and followed a young stock car driver recruited by retired racing star Harry Hogge, played by Robert Duvall, to a new Nascar team. The star-studded cast also included Cruise's ex-wife Nicole Kidman, John C Reilly, and Randy Quaid.
Hathaway's role is the latest in a busy year for the actress, who also stars in Sir Christopher Nolan's adaptation of The Odyssey, The Devil Wears Prada 2, The End Of Oak Street, Mother Mary, and the upcoming film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's 2018 psychological thriller Verity. She is also known for her Oscar-winning performance as Fantine in Les Miserables.
Cruise is best known for starring as naval aviator Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the Top Gun film series and as secret agent Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible franchise. He is renowned for performing his own stunts, including hanging off a plane, scaling Dubai's Burj Khalifa skyscraper, and riding a motorcycle off a cliff.
