Chrissy Teigen has apologised to Courtney Stodden for sending abusive messages on Twitter a decade ago, including urging them to take their own life. The messages were sent in 2011, when Stodden was a 16-year-old bride to actor Doug Hutchison, then 50.
In a series of tweets on Tuesday, Teigen described her past behaviour as that of an "insecure, attention-seeking troll". She said she was "ashamed and completely embarrassed" and would "forever work" to be a better person. The apology came after she returned to Twitter following a break from the platform.
Stodden, who recently came out as non-binary, accepted the apology but questioned its sincerity. They noted that Teigen had never contacted them privately and had in fact blocked them on Twitter. Stodden suggested the apology might be a public attempt to protect Teigen's brand partnerships.
Teigen, who is married to singer John Legend, said she had tried to contact Stodden privately and hoped they could heal. She also acknowledged that her past mistakes were not limited to this incident, adding that she would try hard not to let down her followers again.
Stodden told The Daily Beast that other celebrities had also joined in the bullying. "There were a lot of celebrities acting like playground bullies," they said. Stodden and Hutchison divorced last year.
