Coronation Street actor Vinta Morgan has described working with Sue Devaney as being 'like a kid in a sweet shop' as their on-screen storyline takes a new emotional turn.
Sue Devaney, who plays Debbie Webster, has been a beloved figure on the ITV soap for over three decades, having first taken on the role at the age of 16. However, fans were devastated when it was revealed that Debbie has early-onset vascular dementia.
Dementia storyline progresses
After initially worrying about memory loss and booking a private clinic appointment, Debbie's symptoms were confirmed as early-onset vascular dementia. The storyline has since shown the impact of the disease, including a prison stint earlier this year after she was wrongly implicated in the death of vicar Billy Mayhew.
During this time, Debbie married Ronnie Bailey, played by Vinta Morgan. Speaking to Inside Soap, Vinta praised his co-star: "She is absolutely amazing. I call her the eighth wonder of the world! She is just total happiness in one person. And as an actor, I lucked out working with her. I'm like a little kid, getting to the sweet shop waiting to go and see what we're going to do today!"
Emotional turn in Weatherfield
The dementia storyline took an emotional turn in Monday's episode when Debbie saw an older lady looking lost and confused on the cobbles, who turned out to be paramedic Sienna Milburn's mum. Later, Bernie Winter discovered Debbie had been researching assisted dying after visiting her at the hotel.
Vinta hinted at what's next for the couple: "Obviously, there are going to be more and more moments where the disease shows its face. Also, you've met Debbie, she's a person who's been able to live life by her own means, not needing anybody. Being in a position where she knows that she's going to need people is not a place she wants to be. However, when Ronnie made his vows, he meant them."
