Coronation Street fans have demanded more after what they believe were rare scenes between two 'forgotten' related characters. The long-running ITV soap, filmed in Salford, aired a moment in Monday's (August 24) episode where Kirk Sutherland paid a visit to his sister Maria Windass.
Kirk, played by Andy Whyment, has been a fixture in Weatherfield since his debut in 2000. However, the actor actually appeared in Corrie in 1990 and 1997 under the name Mark. He also previously appeared in the Salford-based programme as Wayne, a man buying fireworks in The Kabin.
Rare sibling reunion on the cobbles
Kirk first arrived on the cobbles when Tyrone Dobbs mistakenly believed he was Maria Sutherland's boyfriend. Maria clarified that Kirk is her brother and co-owner of Weatherfield Kennels.
Maria, played by Samia Longchambon, made her first appearance just a day before Kirk, on May 19, 2000. The actress, from Eccles, beat Girls Aloud's Kimberley Walsh and Hear'Say star Suzanne Shaw to land the role. Andy's debut followed on May 20 of the same year.
Fans react to long-overdue scenes
Despite their family connection, Kirk and Maria are rarely seen together on the street. In the recent episode, Kirk wanted Maria to join him at the pub for a craft beer event. She eventually opened up about her worries over her husband, Gary Windass, and his possible prison stint after helping former flame Sarah Platt cover up the murder of Theo Silverton.
