Coronation Street fans are convinced they have uncovered Steve McDonald's surprising new love interest following Cassie Plummer's impending exit. Viewers of the ITV soap have speculated that Steve, played by Simon Gregson, could ignite a passionate new relationship with Rovers barmaid Glenda Shuttleworth (Jodie Prenger) once Cassie bids farewell to Weatherfield.
Steve's Current Relationship Struggles
Steve, who has had numerous relationships on the cobbles including marriages to Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford), Michelle Connor (Kym Marsh), and Becky Granger (Katherine Kelly), is currently in a relationship with Tyrone Dobbs' (Alan Halsall) mum, Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney). The pair recently faced multiple obstacles. Cassie notably proposed to Steve at Street Cars earlier this week, only to be unexpectedly rejected while Steve's ex, Tracy, eavesdropped via the taxi radio.
During Wednesday's (July 8) episode, currently available on ITVX, Steve assured Ken (William Roache) and Tracy that he remained committed to Cassie and wished to repair their relationship. However, Cassie was quickly frustrated upon spotting Steve helping his ex-wife with a flower delivery, prompting her to drown her sorrows at the Chariot Square Hotel.
Cassie's Departure and New Character
ITV announced earlier this year that Claire Sweeney would be departing the cobbles after almost three years portraying Cassie. Claire has hinted at a "blast from the past" arriving as part of Cassie's forthcoming departure storyline, which she characterised as "heartbreaking", "dramatic", and "explosive". While at the hotel bar, Cassie encountered a man and drunkenly attempted to flirt with him, only to face a harsh rejection. Moments after the man accused Cassie of being a sex worker, he departed, leaving Cassie astonished to discover a familiar name on his bill - Ross Wilkes.

Ahead of Cassie's departure, some soap fans are already speculating about Steve's potential new romance with an unexpected Weatherfield resident. Several viewers suspect that Steve could ignite a passionate new relationship with Glenda Shuttleworth once Cassie bids her final farewell. "I have a prediction. Seeing as Claire Sweeney is leaving, I think Steve and Glenda will become a couple," one person wrote on a Facebook fan page.
