George Clooney has hit back at US President Donald Trump after Trump mocked the actor and his wife, Amal, for becoming French citizens. Trump wrote on Truth Social that the Clooneys were 'two of the worst political prognosticators of all time' and that France was welcome to them, citing the country's 'major crime problem' due to immigration.
The 64-year-old Oscar winner, his wife, and their two children were granted French citizenship earlier this month after living on a property in southern France for years. Clooney has praised French privacy laws and the opportunity to raise his children away from Hollywood.
Responding to Trump's comments, Clooney told the Hollywood Reporter: 'I totally agree with the current president. We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November,' referring to the US midterm elections.
The decision to grant citizenship to the Clooneys has drawn criticism from some French officials, including junior interior minister Marie-Pierre Vedrenne, who noted a 'double standard' given Clooney's poor French. However, interior minister Laurent Nunez and the foreign ministry defended the move, citing the couple's contributions to France's cultural prestige and international relations.
Clooney admitted his French remains poor despite language courses, while Amal, a human rights lawyer, speaks fluently. The family acquired the Domaine du Canadel estate in Provence in 2021, where Clooney says they are 'happiest'.
