Chico Credits Ozzy Osbourne as Key to X Factor Success
X Factor legend Chico Slimani has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late rock icon Ozzy Osbourne, revealing the Black Sabbath frontman played a crucial and "instrumental" role in his rise to fame during the 2005 series of the ITV talent show.
In an exclusive interview, the 54-year-old entertainer, who now runs global wellness retreats, insisted that Ozzy was equally as influential as his wife and Chico's official mentor, Sharon Osbourne, in propelling his career forward after his memorable quarter-final run.
The Pivotal Pool Jump Moment
Chico recounted the now-iconic moment from his audition at the Osbourne family home, where he spontaneously leapt into their swimming pool during a performance. "Ozzy literally comes up and goes 'I thought that was freaking amazing'. That was a pivotal moment for me," he explained.
He added, "I didn't even think I had a live microphone in my hand. I could have electrocuted myself." The daring stunt earned Ozzy's immediate approval, which Chico believes was transformative. "Anyone who's anyone who had any doubts were like if 'it's good enough for Ozzy, it's good enough for us'."
Equal Influence to Mentor Sharon
While Sharon Osbourne guided him through the competition as his mentor, Chico emphasised Ozzy's behind-the-scenes impact. "Ozzy was instrumental in my success, probably more, or just as much as Sharon was. He championed me," he stated.
This endorsement proved critical, as Chico went on to achieve a UK number one single with "It's Chico Time" in 2006, dethroning Madonna from the top spot. Reflecting on Ozzy's character, Chico said, "I thank him very much and I love him dearly. He has got to be one of the funniest, loveliest, kindest people I've ever met."
Looking to the Future
Over two decades since his X Factor appearance, Chico hinted at a potential return to television. Speaking on behalf of the online bingo platform Zingo Bingo, he revealed, "I've got a few TV ideas that I've pitched and there is some interest but I can't tell you too much."
One concept in development is a celebrity retreat show, tentatively titled "Celebrity HU Breath Retreats with Chico," which would showcase participants' emotional journeys. "Hopefully you'll be able to see the Celebrity HU Breath Retreats with Chico and learn what people experience on their journey from the fears, the tears and hopefully some cheers," he shared.
Chico's revelation underscores the lasting impact of Ozzy Osbourne, who passed away from a heart attack in July 2025, not only as a rock legend but as a supportive figure in the careers of emerging artists like himself.
