Charlie Stayt's private life and BBC Breakfast salary revealed

Charlie Stayt has been waking up the nation on BBC Breakfast for two decades. The 64-year-old broadcaster has fronted the morning programme since 2006, with Naga Munchetty joining as a permanent co-host in 2014.

Charlie, who presents the show from Thursday to Saturday with Naga, earns between £190,000 and £194,999 annually, according to the BBC Annual Report on top on-air salaries. His earnings have remained consistent with previous years.

A private family life

Despite being one of the BBC's best-known faces, Charlie keeps his personal life out of the public eye and is rarely photographed with his wife, Anne Breckell. Reports differ on her career: The Sun describes her as a manager at a multinational company, while The Mail says she works as a radio presenter and actress.

The couple married in 1995 and welcomed two children two years later. Their daughter Phoebe Senara was born in 1997, followed by son Jake Hamilton in 2000. The family reportedly lives in west London.

Early career and rise to fame

Charlie is fiercely private about his home life and has no social media accounts. Before journalism, he worked as a roofer, a barman and a roadie, later describing himself as a "late starter as a journalist."

He began his career at a commercial radio station in his native Gloucester before becoming a news presenter in London. In 1995, he joined ITN, then moved to Five News as a correspondent, later presenting prime-time bulletins and live debate programmes. During his time at Five News, he covered the 9/11 attacks and stayed with ITN for a decade.

In 2006, Charlie first appeared on BBC Breakfast as a stand-in presenter, becoming the permanent host in December 2007. He has also presented reality shows such as Jailbreak and Are You Telepathic, and appeared as a contestant on The Weakest Link in 2022.

Morning routine revealed

Speaking to RadioTimes.com in 2023, Charlie shared his approach to mornings: "I refuse to snooze. As soon as the alarm goes off, I am up."

He added: "The other thing is, I embrace the siesta. It's become a big thing for me. I sort of sit down in the afternoon and consciously do nothing. No snooze and have a siesta, that's the formula."

BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One at 6am.
