Fans of Channel 4's period drama Becoming Elizabeth are comparing it to blockbuster hits like Game of Thrones and Wolf Hall, with many declaring the little-known series superior. The eight-episode historical drama, based on real events from the Tudor era, is available to stream free on Channel 4.
Plot and Cast
Created and written by British playwright Anya Reiss alongside an all-female writing team including Emily Ballou, Anna Jordan and Suhayla El-Bushra, the series depicts the formative years of Queen Elizabeth I, the only surviving child of Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII. The orphaned teenager becomes embroiled in court politics as the show chronicles her turbulent path towards the throne.
Its official plot states: "Elizabeth Tudor, an orphaned teenager who becomes embroiled in the political and sexual politics of the English court on her journey to secure the crown."
The series debuted on Channel 4 on June 15, 2022, starring Alicia von Rittberg as Elizabeth, with Romola Garai, Bella Ramsey, Jessica Raine, and Tom Cullen in supporting roles, alongside Jamie Parker, Oliver Zetterström and John Heffernan.
Critical Acclaim and Fan Reaction
Despite critical praise, the show was axed after a single series due to disappointing viewing figures. Fans continue to voice frustration online over the cancellation. One viewer declared it superior to Wolf Hall: "I think the pace, acting and drama was better than Wolf Hall." Another IMDB user review drew parallels with Game of Thrones: "A well written political drama. This show is extremely well written. The dialogues, the setting, the acting, and the gritty realistic atmosphere remind one of the early seasons of Game Of Thrones."
Critics have also been effusive, with one writing: "Tells the story well, thanks to a script that sees complexity in every action and amazing performances." Another described it as "A smartly crafted portrait of royal intrigue."
