Celebrity MasterChef blindfold taste test threatens elimination

Celebrity MasterChef contestants face a tense blindfolded challenge in tonight's episode, where one wrong answer could send them out of a crucial test. The BBC cooking competition returns for its second week of heats tonight (August 25), with five new famous faces battling to impress the judges and secure their place.

Before moving to the next stage, the celebrities must survive one of the most nerve-racking challenges yet. YouTuber and comedian TommyInnit, actor Nitin Ganatra, Gladiator 'Dynamite' Emily Steel, former Royal Ballet dancer Eric Underwood and comic talent Donna Preston are told they will have to identify mystery ingredients without seeing them. A wrong guess will see a contestant eliminated from the challenge, while those who succeed will win a significant advantage in the next round.

Judge reveals blindfolded test

The pressure is immediately apparent when judge Giorgio Locatelli reveals what awaits them. "Since this challenge is about the palate and the palate only, you will be doing this blindfolded," he tells the celebrities. Emily is visibly taken aback, admitting: "Oh, I'm scared."

Once the test begins, the reality of what is at stake becomes clear. The contestants are presented with small cubes of meat, fish, vegetables or fruit and must work out what they are tasting using only their senses. There is no opportunity to study the ingredient, judge its appearance or rely on its colour.

Contestants face the test

Eric is one of the first to face the pressure. Given a small brown square, he smells it before taking a cautious bite. He admits the mystery food seems familiar but struggles to identify it, taking another bite, prompting Grace Dent to joke that he is going back for a second taste. After weighing up his options, Eric guesses beetroot. Grace confirms he has got it right, telling him he remains in the challenge.

Donna is next and is handed a green mystery cube. She initially struggles, wondering whether the ingredient could be a fruit, then confidently guesses cucumber. Giorgio confirms she has made the correct call, sparking cheers from the other contestants, with one shouting: "Whoop! Go Donna."

Nitin then takes his turn, immediately getting stuck in. After tasting it, he is clearly impressed: "Oh my God, this is so nice. It's juicy, it's fresh and I can take my time and…" He eventually decides the mystery food is pineapple. Grace confirms he has made the right call, though she comments on his enthusiastic eating.

Pressure on remaining contestants

With Eric, Donna and Nitin safely through, the pressure shifts to Emily and TommyInnit. For them, there is no room for a careless guess. One mistake could end their attempt to win the advantage, leaving them watching from the side-lines while their rivals continue.

The challenge becomes more than a test of taste, with elimination hanging over every answer. The celebrities must keep their nerves under control and trust their palates, as getting it wrong could prove costly.

It comes after Welsh presenter Jason Mohammad was recently forced to bid farewell to the competition. Jason encountered problems with his dish, with Grace noting: "You had trouble in that round. I could see you beginning to become very stressed and I think that the fact that you've delivered this entire plate is really to be commended." Jason added: "That was a really tough one because I've never, ever made cabbage rolls." His efforts weren't enough to keep him in the running, and shortly after his exit he said: "Thank you so much. It's been incredible. Thank you for having me... It's been the best thing I've ever done."

Celebrity MasterChef is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
