The BBC has released a teaser for the explosive 40th anniversary special of hospital drama Casualty, set to air in September. The promo, posted on Instagram, shows cast members covered in dust and debris, hinting at a dramatic episode.
Teaser shows cast in peril
In the teaser, actors including Elinor Lawless as Stevie Nash and Olly Rix as Flynn Byron pose for promotional photographs, with makeup artists sprinkling grey powder on their costumes to mimic the fallout of an explosion. The caption read: "Something's coming. #Casualty40".
Two cast members were notably absent from the video: Sammy T Dobson, who plays Nicole Piper, and Kirsty Mitchell, who plays Faith Cadogan. A source told the Express: "Sammy didn't come back after the Christmas break, and Kirsty is more recent, but they are both gone." The BBC declined to comment.
Character storylines and exits
Dobson's character Nicole, a junior doctor, had recently struggled after sinking her savings into a property that was destroyed by an explosion caused by dangerous chemicals. Dobson joined the show in March 2024. Mitchell's Faith, an advanced practitioner, went into premature labour with her daughter Pearl due to the same chemicals. Mitchell had been playing Faith for seven years, having joined in December 2019.
Details of their exit storylines have not been revealed, but they are still thought to be appearing in the two anniversary episodes, which air on 5 September.
Anniversary special details
In the teaser, Lawless and Rix were seen in emergency safety suits, leading fans to believe Stevie and Flynn will be central to the drama. Their romantic storyline had been paused after Flynn's cold reaction to the death of his former army boss, Jack Bard, troubled Stevie.
The BBC previously released a trailer for the special, opening with a huge explosion as Flynn looked on in shock. A chorus of children singing "Happy Birthday Dear Dad" played over footage of emergency department staff, including clinical lead Dr Dylan Keogh, gathering outside the hospital. The trailer showed a fight breaking out inside the hospital and Dr Keogh in tears.
