Britney Spears has hit back at her ex-husband Kevin Federline over allegations in his upcoming memoir, describing his portrayal of her as 'extremely hurtful and exhausting'. In a statement on social media, the pop star disputed claims that she behaved erratically around their two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, during their marriage.
Federline's memoir, You Thought You Knew, details his two-year marriage to Spears and their subsequent divorce in 2007. In excerpts published by the New York Times, Federline alleges he witnessed Spears using cocaine while breastfeeding and that she would sometimes stand silently in their sons' doorway at night holding a knife. Spears has denied these claims, calling them 'white lies' designed to profit from her.
The book also addresses the conservatorship that controlled Spears's life and finances from 2008 to 2021. Federline writes that while the #FreeBritney movement 'started from a good place', he now believes the focus should shift to a 'Save Britney' movement, warning that 'the clock is ticking' and 'something bad is going to happen if things don't change'.
In her response, Spears expressed frustration over her limited contact with her sons, now aged 19 and 20. She stated that one son had seen her for only 45 minutes in the past five years, while the other had visited just four times. 'Relationships with teenage boys is complex,' she wrote. 'I have pride too. From now on I will let them know when I am available.'
A spokesperson for Spears earlier told the New York Times that Federline and others were 'profiting off her' and that her only concern was her children's wellbeing. Spears, who released her own memoir The Woman in Me in 2023, has previously accused Federline of trying to portray her as 'completely out of control' during their custody battle.
