Britney Spears has voluntarily entered a rehabilitation centre following her arrest for driving under the influence in March. The singer was stopped by police in Ventura County, California, after driving erratically and was found to have drugs and alcohol in her system.
Her manager described her actions as 'completely inexcusable', adding that Spears is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, hoping this can be the first step in long overdue change in her life. A representative for the singer confirmed she has begun treatment.
The arrest comes amid a period of professional distance from music. Spears's last album was released in 2016, and her most recent chart appearance was in 2022 when she collaborated with Elton John on Hold Me Closer, which reached the Top 10 in the US and UK.
In 2024, she stated she would never return to the music industry and preferred ghostwriting for other artists. In January, she said she would never perform in the US again but hoped to perform in the UK and Australia. She sold her song catalogue to Primary Wave in late 2025 for a reported $200m.
Spears published her memoir The Woman in Me in 2023, which is being developed for a film adaptation with director Jon M Chu and producer Marc Platt. She was previously under a conservatorship from 2008 to 2021, which restricted her spending, diet and other aspects of her life.
