Chris Applebaum, the director of Britney Spears' iconic Overprotected remix music video, has revealed the moment Justin Timberlake ended their relationship via text message while on set. The revelation came during an appearance on the HyperFixated podcast, where Applebaum shared details of the intense 24-hour shoot.
Breakup text during filming
Applebaum recalled that the breakup happened toward the end of the second day, around hour 20, as the crew prepared for the final rain sequence. Britney was missing, and despite repeated knocks on her trailer, she wouldn't come out. Choreographer Brian Friedman warned the director it was a 'bad situation'.
When Applebaum entered the trailer, he found Britney surrounded by solemn crew members with 'iron curtain eyes'. She showed him her flip phone screen, revealing the text from Justin that ended their three-year relationship.
Turning heartbreak into performance
Applebaum initially offered to end the shoot, but then, inspired by a glance at her animal crackers, he suggested an alternative: 'You could get back out there and do a performance that's so hot that you show him he just messed up the best thing that he's ever had.' Britney had a light bulb moment and agreed, resulting in the powerful performance seen in the video.
The couple's split in 2002 was highly publicized. Britney later moved on with Kevin Federline, while Justin married Jessica Biel. In her 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, Britney detailed the breakup, writing that she was 'comatose in Louisiana' while Justin was 'happily running around Hollywood', and criticized her portrayal as the 'harlot who'd broken the heart of America's golden boy'.
