Bob Harris on BBC Radio 2 Exit: 'Not What I Chose'

Bob Harris, the former BBC Radio 2 presenter, has opened up about his departure from the station, revealing that leaving was not his decision. The 80-year-old broadcaster, who has been battling cancer, stepped down from his hosting duties at the beginning of June after an illustrious 56-year career. He stated that his priority is now to focus on his health and recovery.

Emotional Instagram Post

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Harris shared several photos of himself smiling alongside colleagues such as Greg James. He wrote: "Having to stop work because of ill health is not what I would have chosen, but the massive positive is the quality time I am now able to spend with lovely friends." The post quickly garnered an outpouring of support from friends and fans alike.

Support from Fellow Broadcasters

Zoe Ball, who also recently left her role at the BBC, commented: "These pics Bob," accompanied by red heart emojis. Greg James added: "Big Bob! We love you. Sorry for taking this photo on a potato x." Richard Young wrote: "Thinking of you every day. My friend... take it easy and enjoy your days. Love Richard x."

Reflecting on a Storied Career

In an earlier statement, Harris expressed his gratitude for his long career. "It's incredible to think that my broadcasting career has spanned almost 56 years," he said. "I am very fortunate to have spent my entire working life doing something I love so much. I am a massive BBC loyalist, and I'm grateful that I have always been given the freedom to build my programmes in my own way."

He continued: "Most of my time on air has been spent with my fabulous family at Radio 2 and it has been such a joy to broadcast on this world-class radio station." Harris added that his health issues forced him to step down, but he realized he must concentrate on getting well. "This has been one of the hardest decisions of my life, but I would never want to be doing programmes knowing that I am unable to give you 100%. I am going to miss you, and I love you very much. Thank you for listening."

Legacy at BBC Radio 2

Harris was best known for hosting Radio 2 Country on Thursdays from 9 to 10pm and Sounds of the 70s on Sundays from 3pm to 5pm. His departure marks the end of an era for the station, which he served with dedication and passion.
