Bob Cryer Mourns Death of Beloved Mother Aged 94

Coronation Street and Hollyoaks star Bob Cryer has announced the death of his beloved mother at the age of 94, describing it as the 'end of a golden era'. The actor, 52, who is the son of late comedian Barry Cryer, shared the sad news on Instagram with a heartfelt tribute.

Emotional Tribute to His Mother

Taking to social media, Bob posted a montage of photos of his mother and wrote: 'The end of a golden era. I promise that the 94 years of love, warmth and generosity you showed us will live on in our family, friends, neighbours and all who knew you. Fare forward and thank you mum.' The actor thanked his mother for all the love she had shown him throughout his life.

Support from Former Castmates

Bob, who played Glenn Donovan in Hollyoaks for two years, received an outpouring of support from his former co-stars. Hollyoaks actor James Redmond wrote: 'Sorry to hear that, mate. Sending love.' Ellis Hollins, who plays Tom Cunningham, posted a red love heart emoji. Fans also paid tribute, with one saying: 'What a life she must’ve had, the stories… Sorry for your loss Bob.' Another added: 'Sending sincere condolences. What a beautiful lady she was.'

Career Highlights

Bob Cryer has had a varied acting career. He appeared in Coronation Street twice: first as Inspector Johnson in 1998, who led the search for missing Toyah Battersby, and later as Robert Dover, manager of Weatherfield FC. In Hollyoaks, he played evil Glenn Donovan for nearly 100 episodes, involved in a coercive control storyline with partner Grace Black. Glenn was eventually killed by serial killer Breda McQueen as part of her plan to rid the village of 'bad dads'.

His other television credits include roles in Highlander, Holby City, Bombshell, The Bill, Doctors, No Signal, Outnumbered, The Interceptor and The Gold. Film roles include Superbad, Legend, Grimsby, Giddy Stratospheres, The Adventures of Maid Marian, The Undertaker and Fortunes of War. Most recently, he played a police officer in the flash forward episode of EastEnders on New Year's Day.

Remembering Barry Cryer

Bob's father, Barry Cryer, died aged 86 in 2022. The legendary comedian wrote sketches for numerous stars including Bob Hope, Morecambe and Wise, Sir Billy Connolly, Tommy Cooper, The Two Ronnies and Les Dawson. His family told the Mirror that he was in 'good spirits till the end' and was telling an Archbishop of Canterbury joke to a nurse shortly before he died. They said: 'That was one of his gifts, making strangers feel welcome. Making them laugh.'
