BBC Unveils First Look at Doctor Foster Final Series

The BBC has released a first-look image from the third and final series of Doctor Foster, featuring actress Suranne Jones reprising her role as Gemma Foster.

Return After a Decade

The drama is returning a full decade after series two, with Suranne, 47, stepping back into the role of Gemma. She will be joined by familiar faces Bertie Carvel as her on-screen husband Simon and Tom Taylor as their son Tom. Thusitha Jayasundera also returns as Gemma's close friend Ros, while Anna Madeley reprises her role as Lucy.

In the newly released image, Suranne is pictured at the head of a dining table, gazing directly at the camera while her guests mingle over food and drinks, reports the Manchester Evening News.

New Cast Members

A number of fresh faces have joined the cast, including Slow Horses star Dustin Demri-Burns, who takes on the role of Gemma's new partner Callum. Further newcomers include The Serpent Queen's Rosalie Craig, Grantchester's Gracie Oddie-James, and Top Boy star Michael Balogun.

Series two saw Gemma uncover her husband's infidelity and take her revenge, yet the consequences left her teenage son Tom, then 15, vanishing without trace. In series three, she has found love again and is on the verge of remarrying, only for ghosts from her past to resurface and place her reputation in jeopardy.

Ratings and Awards

Doctor Foster was a ratings triumph when it originally aired in 2015 and 2017, with the series two finale drawing an audience of nearly 10 million viewers. Suranne also claimed a BAFTA for her leading portrayal of Gemma.

She had previously spoken about reprising her role: "When I got the call to ask if I wanted to return as Gemma Foster, I knew the time was right. We needed space from the first two series, and we needed Tom – Gemma and Simon's runaway son – to return as an adult with questions. For me, this time around, it's about accountability and questioning – can we ever truly sever ties with our past and the damage or traumas that haunt us, so we can fully move forward? Gemma and Simon have so much to unpick!"

Following the first look being shared online, fans expressed their excitement. One person said: "@angel_x_sharpe omg she’s back." Someone else shared: "Cannot wait for this, I've waited such a long time." While a third commented: "I cannot wait!!!" As another added: "Love Love Love Dr Foster, watched it over and over again."

Doctor Foster is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
