Israeli actor Alon Aboutboul has died at the age of 60. He collapsed on Habonim Beach near Zichron Ya’acov on Tuesday, and despite receiving CPR from lifeguards, he could not be revived, according to The Jerusalem Post.
Israel’s culture and sport minister, Miki Zohar, expressed deep sorrow on X, saying he was saddened by the sudden passing. He praised Aboutboul’s passion for acting, noting a recent interview in which the actor spoke about a film he had just completed. “Alon was a recipient of the Ophir Award and the Television Academy Award, and over the years, he portrayed a wide range of characters,” Zohar wrote, adding that Aboutboul left a profound mark on Israeli culture.
Born in Kiryat Ata in 1965, Aboutboul graduated from Thelma Yellin High School of Arts and made his film debut in Hapnimiyah. He gained recognition with Two Fingers from Sidon, which premiered at Cannes, and appeared in his first American production, Every Time We Say Goodbye, before starring in Rambo III alongside Sylvester Stallone.
His later career included roles in Body of Lies, US series such as NCIS, The Mentalist and Fringe, and a recurring part in Snowfall. He was perhaps best known to international audiences as Dr Leonid Pavel in The Dark Knight Rises. In Israel, he featured in Shabatot VeHagim, Sirens and Beaufort. His most recent work was the miniseries The German. Aboutboul is survived by his wife, Shir Bilia, and their four children.
