Christina Applegate has revealed that her former friend Brad Pitt did not speak to her for years after she invited him to the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards as her date, only to leave with another man. In her memoir You With The Sad Eyes, the actress recounts how she was 17 at the time and had developed a crush on Pitt, then a little-known actor.
Applegate invited Pitt to accompany her to the awards ceremony. He kindly drove her mother, Nancy Priddy, and her best friend, Lori Allison, to the event. However, upon seeing Sebastian Bach, the frontman of Skid Row, Applegate decided to leave with him instead. She admits that Pitt was not yet the Hollywood star he would become, and she felt a surge of confidence.
After being ditched, Pitt drove Applegate's mother and friend home, narrowly avoiding a fight with gang members at a petrol station. Applegate says Pitt was “subsequently very mad” at her, and they did not speak for many years. Later, two of Pitt's girlfriends separately asked Applegate if she was the one who left him at the VMAs, as Pitt had told them he was still angry.
Eventually, they reconciled, with Applegate acknowledging she was a child and that Pitt deserved better. She notes that Pitt is now a global superstar, while Bach still has long hair. Applegate previously discussed the incident on Watch What Happens Live in 2015, and Bach confirmed his role the following year in his autobiography.
