Anita Rani: From Bradford to BBC Stardom
BBC Countryfile presenter Anita Rani, 48, has been a familiar face on television since the early 2000s. Born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, to Indian parents, her father Bal moved to the UK at age four. Her family ran a textile business where Anita and her siblings worked before she pursued a media career.
Anita attended Bradford Girls' Grammar School and developed a passion for journalism early, presenting her first radio show at 14. She studied broadcasting at the University of Leeds and began her career as a BBC researcher. She later joined the BBC Asian Network, hosting the weekend Hot Breakfast Show.
Career Milestones and Television Roles
Her first major TV presenting role was hosting Channel 5's live news and entertainment programme "The Edit" in 2002. She then became a regular correspondent on Channel 4's The Cricket Show before co-hosting Cricket AM on Sky Sports with Simon Thomas. Over the years, she has appeared on The One Show, Watchdog, Four Rooms, and notably, Countryfile.
Anita joined Countryfile over a decade ago and has thrived. She also presents Friday and Saturday editions of BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour. In 2024, she participated in Celebrity Race Across the World with her father Bal, completing a 5,900km trek across Central and South America, finishing six hours behind the winners. In 2015, she competed on Strictly Come Dancing, reaching the semi-finals with professional partner Gleb Savchenko.
New Countryfile Series: East Coast Road Trip
On Sunday, July 5, 2026, BBC One's Countryfile launches a four-part special where Anita journeys along England's eastern coastline. The series explores wildlife, terrain, and communities adapting to life on the sea's edge. In the first episode, she visits Northey Island in Essex, uncovering a vital bird sanctuary and examining threats from rising sea levels. She also highlights initiatives creating more space for nature.
Personal Heartbreak: Divorce and Miscarriage
Anita married Bhupinder Rehal in 2009, but they separated in 2023 after over a decade of marriage. Speaking to The Times, she said she was "entering chapter two" of her life. After the divorce, she took a solo trip to the Dolomites, explaining: "Becoming single in my mid-forties has made me re-evaluate everything."
In 2018, Anita experienced a miscarriage, which she described to Red magazine as something that "completely shifted my perspective on life." She found it difficult to cope while maintaining a busy Countryfile schedule and preparing for the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special. Reflecting in 2020, she said: "All year I felt anxiety and insecurity like never before... I was sad. Deeply, truly and cripplingly sad."
Countryfile: Anita Rani's East Coast Road Trip – Northey Island airs Sunday at 6pm on BBC Two and iPlayer.
