Ali G trailer: character faces fatherhood in new film

The first trailer for the upcoming film Ali G: Who Iz I? was released on Tuesday, showing the character Ali G preparing to become a father. Sacha Baron Cohen has reprised the role he originally played in The 11 O’Clock Show and Da Ali G Show in the 1990s.

The trailer sees Ali G and a woman, played by British comedian Morgana Robinson, expecting a baby together. In one scene, the couple meets a woman who asks Ali G: “What kind of father do you want to be?” He replies: “I was thinking absent.”

Directorial debut and documentary premise

The film is Cohen’s directorial debut. Its premise sees the hip-hop journalist being followed by cameras for a year in order to make a “documentary”. In a voice-over, the character says: “I iz been gone for 20 years, chillin’. And in that time the world went to crap. There was Covid, wars and Ed Sheeran.

“But I iz gonna get back on top with a brand new thing called a documentary. For the first time ever, this is a film with real people, not actors. For over a year, we let the cameras follow me everywhere, nothing was off limits.”

Trailer scenes and character's return

The trailer shows Ali G walking the streets, wearing various elaborate outfits and attempting to join in on the mukbang online trend. He adds: “It got the very latest firearms technology, action, drama, heartbreak, plot twists and the very latest TikTok trends.”

The return of Ali G was first revealed in July 2025 when Baron Cohen was seen filming in character in Oxfordshire. The character rose to popularity in the late 90s with his appearances on The 11 O’Clock Show and was given his own programme, Da Ali G Show, and appeared in the 2002 film Ali G Indahouse.

Career and release date

Baron Cohen later focused on other characters such as Borat and Bruno, who both appeared in self-titled films. The actor has appeared in other films including Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street and Les Miserables. He was married to Australian actress Isla Fisher from 2010 to 2025, with whom he shares three children. Ali G: Who Iz I? will be released on October 23.
