Alan Carr Sells Home to Fund Castle Renovation

Celebrity Traitors winner Alan Carr has listed his £2.5 million West Sussex home for sale to raise funds for the renovation of his newly acquired Scottish castle. The 49-year-old comedian purchased Ayton Castle, a Grade II listed property in the Scottish Borders, for £3.5 million earlier this year. The renovation project, which will be documented by Disney+ for a series, aims to transform the castle into a luxury retreat. However, the costs have exceeded initial estimates, prompting Carr to sell his current residence to secure the necessary funds before hosting the first wedding at the venue.

The Castle and Its Features

Ayton Castle boasts 16 bedrooms, 160 acres of gardens and parkland, and a working miniature railway. The property, dating from the 15th and 17th centuries, is described by estate agents as “a country estate of timeless distinction.” They highlight its fine oak timber frame and traditional stone and clay tiled roof, noting that subsequent additions have been made with sensitivity and architectural integrity, preserving its historic soul while adapting it for modern living.

The West Sussex home, which Carr purchased with his ex-husband Paul Drayton before their 2022 divorce, includes a drawing room, four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a swimming pool. The sale is expected to provide a significant portion of the funding needed for the castle renovation.

Rise in Profile After Celebrity Traitors Win

Carr’s victory on Celebrity Traitors in 2025 dramatically raised his public profile. He admitted being shocked by his win, saying, “I felt so stupid. When I did The Traitors, I looked at my work diary and my agent had actually put in work after the first week, and I said ‘oh no, I’m doing The Traitors’. He said, ‘Alan, you’ll be out first week with your motor mouth, you aren’t going to last’. Then it kept going on and on.” He added, “I thought I would be gone on day two.”
