Stephen King on Trump, villains, and why he can't stop writing

Stephen King has described Donald Trump as a 'horror story' and revealed that the former US president inspired a new novel. In a Q&A with Guardian readers, the bestselling author said: 'Trump is a horror story, isn't he? I think he's a very scary figure.' King did not provide further details about the book but confirmed it draws on the former president's influence.

King also discussed his creative process, noting that he writes on Microsoft Word and sometimes uses longhand before transcribing. He listens to music while rewriting, favouring club music or disco with a repetitive beat. 'Today I was listening to some zydeco music, and LCD Soundsystem,' he said.

The author reflected on his prolific output, saying he writes to entertain himself during the extra hours between 9am and noon. 'You can only watch so many gameshows on TV,' he joked. King also revealed that he still occasionally sneaks into bookshops to sign copies of his books without being noticed.

On the evolution of his character Holly Gibney, King said he 'fell in love with her' as she transformed from a walk-on joke character into a heroine across seven books. He noted that she remains single and may be a virgin, adding: 'I haven't explored that.'
