Author Rachel Reid Delays Next 'Heated Rivalry' Book Due to Parkinson's Symptoms
Rachel Reid Delays Book Over Parkinson's Symptoms

Canadian author Rachel Reid has announced a significant delay to the release of her next novel, "Unrivaled," citing the worsening symptoms of her Parkinson's disease as the primary reason. The book, which is part of her popular "Game Changers" series that inspired HBO Max's hit show "Heated Rivalry," was originally scheduled for publication in September 2026 but will now not be available until June 1, 2027.

Impact of Parkinson's on Writing Process

In a heartfelt Instagram video update shared on Tuesday, Reid explained how her condition has dramatically affected her ability to write. "My life has gotten very different in the last couple months, and although it's all good, it's also taken away my ability to have quality time to write," said the author, who received her Parkinson's diagnosis in 2023. She emphasized that ensuring "Unrivaled" becomes the best possible book remains her top priority, necessitating this difficult decision.

Physical Challenges and Adaptation

Reid detailed the specific physical challenges she faces: "My Parkinson's symptoms have gotten a bit worse, and it's made it difficult physically to write, so I'm definitely a lot slower." She revealed that simple tasks like typing or sitting for extended periods have become increasingly problematic, forcing her to explore alternative writing methods such as voice-to-text technology. "I need to figure out new ways to write," she admitted, acknowledging that the process now takes considerably more time.

Publisher Support and Fan Reassurance

The author expressed gratitude toward her publisher for granting the extended timeline, stating they have been "gracious enough to give those to me." She reassured fans who have already pre-ordered the book that their orders will be held and honored upon release. Reid confidently promised readers that the wait will be worthwhile: "Ultimately, it's going to be a much better book, and that's the most important thing to me. I think it'll be better for the readers, and it'll be better for the characters."

Silver Lining Amid Health Struggles

Interestingly, Reid shared a positive development stemming from her health challenges. During press interviews for the HBO series, director Jacob Tierney mentioned her Parkinson's diagnosis in a CNN interview, which unexpectedly led to a top Parkinson's expert reaching out to offer assistance. "I've never gotten to talk to a Parkinson's expert. I've been on a five-year waiting list here because I live in a very small place," Reid explained. This connection has now provided her with access to specialized neurological care that was previously unavailable.

Context of the 'Heated Rivalry' Phenomenon

The "Heated Rivalry" television series, based on Reid's book series, follows the complex relationship between rival Major League Hockey players Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov. Since its debut on HBO Max in November, the show has developed into a cultural phenomenon, particularly in the United States and Canada. It expanded to the United Kingdom in January and has seen its audience grow by over 100 percent since the first season concluded in December. The series has already been renewed for a second season, further cementing its popularity.

Reid's openness about her Parkinson's journey and its impact on her creative work highlights the intersection of health challenges with artistic production. As fans await "Unrivaled," her commitment to quality over speed serves as a testament to her dedication to both her craft and her readers.
