Why do children develop such deep affection for their favourite books? It often boils down to the illustrations, the narrative, and most importantly, the emotions these stories evoke. A recent initiative by Guardian Australia has highlighted this beautifully, as young readers share heartfelt reasons for their adoration of classic Australian picture books.
Guardian Australia's Poll Captures Over 3,000 Nominations
Late last year, Guardian Australia invited readers to nominate their top Australian children's picture book, receiving an overwhelming response of more than 3,000 entries. Many parents contributed by relaying their children's explanations for why certain books hold a special place in their hearts. These reasons are as endearing, logical, and humorous as the stories themselves, offering a glimpse into the minds of young readers.
Children's Personal Testimonies on Beloved Books
Here are some of the standout nominations and the children's own words about what makes these books so memorable:
- Magic Beach by Alison Lester: Phoenix, aged 5, says, "I like looking at the pictures because they're great. My favourite picture is the last page because they're all together asleep."
- Jetty Jumping by Andrea Rowe and Hannah Sommerville: Alice, 7, explains, "I like it because she faces her fears. And she did it for her bracelet that was special for her. I'm glad she did that as it looked very pretty."
- Pig the Pug by Aaron Blabey: Jeremy, 6, simply states, "Pig the Pug is silly and he does silly things."
- Kissed by the Moon by Alison Lester: Chloe, 10, reflects, "I love this book because nothing is rushed and, when I read it, it reminds me of when I learnt it and when I first read it. It sucks me into the book and so afterwards I just feel like sitting down and watching bugs and listening to birdsong for hours and hours."
- Mr Chicken Goes to Paris by Leigh Hobbs: Zach, 8, shares, "I like how Yvette and Mr Chicken visit the Eiffel Tower and everyone is scared of him but he's not scary. I would like to visit Paris with Mr Chicken and see all the things there."
- Day Break by Amy McQuire with Matt Chun: Layla, 10, notes, "It made me sad, but I learnt about things I didn't know about living here and I told my friends."
- Possum Magic by Mem Fox and Julie Vivas: Audrey, 9, says, "Because when I was five it was my favourite book ever and, now I am nine, that book is in most of my memories."
- Chip by Kylie Howarth: Babushka, 10, comments, "It makes us laugh! Feeling good before bed helps us to sleep, so this book is perfect!"
- My Shadow is Pink by Scott Stuart: Ada, 8, reveals, "It's really great how they can just pick their own colour and then all their friends have so many colours too! I also like that the dad cries."
- Where is the Green Sheep? by Mem Fox and Judy Horacek: Ophelia, 8, expresses, "I am nominating this book because it is my childhood. It makes me feel sad on the outside and happy on the inside because it is so sweet. If this wins, it will make my year."
Voting Open for the Best Australian Children's Picture Book
Guardian Australia's poll allows the public to vote once a day to determine the ultimate favourite Australian children's picture book. The winner is set to be announced at 6am on 6 February, adding an element of excitement to this celebration of children's literature.
This initiative not only showcases the diversity and quality of Australian picture books but also underscores the profound impact these stories have on young readers, fostering a lifelong love for reading and emotional connection.
