Gruffalo Granny Set to Enchant Readers in New September Release
In an exciting development for fans of children's literature, the beloved Gruffalo family is expanding with the announcement of a third book in the iconic series. Titled Gruffalo Granny, this new instalment will be published by Macmillan on 10 September, bringing a fresh adventure to the deep dark wood.
The upcoming story introduces a new character, Gruffalo Granny, who comes to stay with the Gruffalo and his daughter. An excerpt from the book reads: "The Gruffalo said to his daughter one day, your Gruffalo Granny is coming to stay." This marks the first new Gruffalo tale in over two decades, following the 2004 sequel The Gruffalo's Child, which itself succeeded the original 1999 bestseller The Gruffalo.
Author and Illustrator Reunite for Long-Awaited Sequel
Author Julia Donaldson revealed that the idea for Gruffalo Granny had been brewing for some time, but it was only recently that she found the inspiration to develop it fully. She credited the National Literacy Trust and its Early Words Matter programme with motivating her to revisit the character. "I actually had the basic idea for the story a long time ago, but couldn't think how to develop it," Donaldson explained. "It was only when the National Literacy Trust used the first two books as part of their programme that I was spurred on to get my idea out of the cupboard."
Illustrator Axel Scheffler, Donaldson's frequent collaborator, has returned to provide the artwork for the new book. Scheffler expressed his delight at the project, noting that he had previously denied the possibility of another Gruffalo story. "Till one day out of the blue there came a wonderfully clever and inspired new text by Julia," he said. "How does she do this? Could I decline? Of course not." The book will feature familiar characters from the earlier stories, including Fox, Snake, Owl, and Mouse.
Global Excitement and Charitable Initiatives
The announcement has generated significant excitement worldwide, reflecting the enduring popularity of the Gruffalo series. To date, The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child have sold more than 18 million copies combined and have been translated into 115 languages and dialects. Fans will get an early glimpse of Gruffalo Granny through a special illustration projection in central London and Glasgow on Friday evening.
Alison Ruane, Managing Director at Macmillan Children's Books, highlighted the impact of Donaldson and Scheffler's work. "The impact that Julia Donaldson, Axel Scheffler and The Gruffalo have had on families around the world can not be underestimated," she said. "We are so proud to publish Julia and Axel here at Macmillan's Children's Books, and we can't wait for children and families to experience this new story together."
In addition to the book release, the Gruffalo characters will be involved in charitable activities supported by the National Literacy Trust, aiming to reach more young readers. This initiative aligns with the National Year of Reading, further emphasising the importance of literacy and shared reading experiences.
Legacy of Donaldson and Scheffler Collaborations
Donaldson and Scheffler have a long history of successful collaborations, including titles such as The Snail and the Whale, Room on the Broom, and Stick Man. Many of their stories have been adapted into televised animations and stage productions, becoming staples of family entertainment. The release of Gruffalo Granny is poised to add another cherished chapter to their legacy, promising to delight both children and adults alike.
