Charles Gaines, the author of the 1974 book Pumping Iron that chronicled Arnold Schwarzenegger's rise and helped transform bodybuilding into a global cultural force, has died at 83.
Book's Impact on Bodybuilding
Gaines's book, later turned into a documentary film, followed Schwarzenegger and other bodybuilders as they prepared for the Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe competitions. It introduced the sport to a mainstream audience and launched Schwarzenegger's career beyond the gym.
The book's success led to a 1977 film of the same name, which further cemented Schwarzenegger's status as a star and inspired a generation of fitness enthusiasts.
Legacy
Gaines was also a novelist and screenwriter, but Pumping Iron remained his most influential work. He is survived by his wife and three children.
