Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan has finally broken his silence on the real reason behind Kevin Costner's departure from the hugely successful series, speaking candidly about the split in a rare interview. Costner featured in the show for four and a half seasons before his exit was confirmed in May 2023.
Costner's Original Contract Limited Him to Three Seasons
During an appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Sheridan shed further light on the loss of Yellowstone's leading man. He also dropped the bombshell that Costner was originally only contracted for the first three seasons, before negotiations led to an extension, reports the Express.
"That was in his contract," Sheridan explained. "In my mind, that's when his youngest son takes over [on the show]... But the network was so scared of not having Kevin be a part of it, even though Kevin was ready." He added: "He was ready to go. He had other things he wanted to do but he stayed on for another two seasons."
Network Fears Led to Extended Stay
Sheridan revealed that losing Costner entirely was viewed as an enormous gamble for the Paramount Network, explaining: "The notion of giving up a hit before it had run out of juice to squeeze is very foreign to a network." Cable networks were also circling, Sheridan continued, placing demands on Paramount to commission Yellowstone for a specific number of series. "That's the power of a really big hit show," he stated.
Eventually, Costner "hit a point" where it was time to "do [his] own thing". "But we originally conceived it together that it was three seasons and then the baton is handed. ... Because we had to tread water for a bit there. I think it was pretty evident," he concluded.
Costner's Post-Yellowstone Project Struggles
Shortly after his exit, Costner immediately began working on his own Western venture, the ambitious four-part cinematic saga Horizon: An American Saga. The opening instalment regrettably bombed at cinemas, resulting in the finished second film being denied a widespread release and halting production on the remaining two instalments.
Sheridan's Vision for the Future
Sheridan ultimately achieved his ambition with John Dutton's youngest son, Kayce (played by Luke Grimes), presently leading his own spin-off, Marshals, which will come back for a second series later this year. The Hollywood heavyweight portrayed ranch owner and later Governor of Montana in the beloved Western drama, which charts the fortunes of a powerful cattle-ranching dynasty who employ violence and intimidation to maintain their grip on some of the most coveted land in the state.
Also featuring Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, Wes Bentley and Luke Grimes, the show has given rise to several equally triumphant spin-offs, including Dutton Ranch, with Reilly and Hauser reprising their roles as John's daughter Beth and her husband Rip, which wrapped up its debut season this Friday (June 3).
