Traitors winner Rachel Duffy hospitalised after blender accident

The Traitors winner Rachel Duffy was rushed to A&E after a blender accident sliced open her thumb, leaving her in "severe pain". She later underwent surgery after doctors found she had completely severed her dorsal nerve and partially lacerated her tendon.

Instagram story details the accident

Sharing her story on Instagram, Rachel, who won the last season of The Traitors alongside Stephen Libby, posted a carousel of images, including some showing her thumb wrapped up and fresh stitches. Over the first image, she wrote: "Warning, do not swipe if you're squeamish".

She joked that there is "always one friend in every group that's accident prone" and that this was her. Over a picture of her in a hospital waiting room, she explained: "Two weeks ago, I had an accident with a blender blade which resulted in a trip to A&E. Yes I'm in flip flips and jammie bottoms as I ran out the door with a blood soaked tea towel wrapped around my hand."

Surgery and recovery

Rachel said she had an X-ray to check if the blade had chipped the bone, but it had not. She ended up with a few stitches. Seven days later, when she returned to get the stitches out, things "didn't feel or look quite right", and she experienced "numbness in the thumb" and "limited movement", leading to another hospital assessment.

She showed her hand in a brace and said she was referred to a specialist team. Alongside a picture of her with two surgeons, she wrote: "Did a number on myself and completely severed my dorsal nerve and partially lacerated my tendon. Had surgery on Monday and these legends repaired both in one go."

She added that the surgeons had to widen the original laceration to look inside the hand, and she "nearly passed out" when she saw the large cut. She thanked medical professionals, calling them "phenomenal".

Cast and upcoming events

Rachel asked the physio for a nude-coloured cast because she will be attending the NTAs soon. Her hand will be wrapped up for the next 10 weeks, meaning she will need to be driven around in the immediate future, and she joked that she was "accepting applications".

In the caption, she said: "Oopsie daisy. Everyday's a school day!!! The lesson learned in this little bump in the road…..take the time to read the instructions on a new kitchen blender. A big thank you to the medical staff who looked after me over the past couple of weeks. You are absolute angels. Thank goodness I’m a leftie."
