Cardiff City ratings at Derby as defender fantastic but star has tough outing
Cardiff City ratings at Derby: Bagan stars, Kpakio struggles

Cardiff City showed resilience to earn a point at Pride Park despite being forced to field a makeshift defence because of their injury crisis. Joel Bagan was outstanding at centre-half and earned the star man award, while Nathan Trott, Calum Scanlon, Alex Robertson, Rubin Colwill and Cian Ashford all delivered impressive performances.

Resilient display in adversity

The Bluebirds ultimately had to settle for a point after twice taking the lead, but there was plenty to admire in Brian Barry-Murphy's side. Bagan's early goal-line clearance proved crucial before he grew into the game and helped Cardiff withstand Derby's pressure.

Trott made several important saves, including an excellent early stop from Corey Blackett-Taylor and a crucial one late on to deny Lars Salvesen, giving Cardiff the platform to earn their point. Robertson had a big responsibility screening the makeshift defence and handled it impressively, while his set-piece delivery created Cardiff's opener.

Standout performers and a tough afternoon

Scanlon delivered another assured display from full-back, offering plenty going forward and excelling defensively under pressure. Colwill was a constant creative threat and involved in the move for Salech's goal, although he was withdrawn just before the hour mark having not been fully fit.

Ashford made an excellent start to the campaign, taking his goal well and looking lively before being replaced shortly before the hour. Salech had to battle a lot on his own against Derby's centre-backs but took his goal brilliantly, smashing home Cardiff's second with a clinical finish.

Ronan Kpakio had a difficult afternoon, caught out of possession on a number of occasions and at fault for the deflection that led to Derby's second goal. Perry Ng stepped into an unfamiliar centre-half role alongside Bagan and worked hard to help Cardiff cope with Derby's aerial and direct threat.

Substitutes make an impact

Chris Willock added energy and width after coming on, repeatedly looking to deliver dangerous balls into the box. David Turnbull made a positive contribution, including an excellent defensive intervention at left-back, while Joel Colwill produced a crucial piece of defensive work late on to win a free-kick deep inside Cardiff territory. Isaak Davies added pace and endeavour, winning a corner and trying to get on the end of Willock's crosses.
