Teyana Taylor won Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture at the Golden Globes on Sunday night for her role in One Battle After Another, delivering a tearful speech that urged Black women and girls to embrace their worth.
Presented with the award by Amanda Seyfried and Jennifer Garner at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, Taylor admitted she had not prepared a speech, saying: “I almost didn’t write a speech because I didn’t think I’d win.” She beat nominees including Ariana Grande, Elle Fanning and Emily Blunt.
Taylor, 35, paid tribute to director Paul Thomas Anderson, calling him “Paul ‘Let Him Cook’ Anderson,” and thanked the cast and crew, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Benicio del Toro. She also addressed her children watching at home, joking: “My babies are upstairs watching — y’all better be off those damn phones.”
Closing her speech, Taylor said: “To my Brown sisters and little Brown girls watching tonight, our softness is not a liability. Our depth is not too much. Our light does not need permission to shine. We belong in every room we walk into. Our voices matter and our dreams deserve space.”
One Battle After Another earned nine nominations and also won Best Screenplay, Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson, and Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The Golden Globes have faced scrutiny since 2021 over a lack of Black members in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, leading to reforms including the addition of 21 new members, six of them Black.
