Newcastle United defender Sven Botman has missed 60 games through injury since joining the club in the summer of 2022 from Lille, raising questions about whether he can ever return to his best form.
When fit and firing, the Dutchman is widely regarded as a top-class centre-back and one of the club's most valuable players. His debut Premier League campaign earned him the nickname "Rolls-Royce" after a series of commanding performances.
However, injuries have disrupted his progress, including an ACL injury and a facial fracture, among other issues. Botman is currently first choice on the left side of the back pairing alongside Malick Thiaw, but with Dan Burn returning to fitness, he could soon find himself on the bench.
Injury struggles and form
Botman has had an up-and-down time of late, with a shocking pre-season followed by a decent start to the Premier League, but indifferent form has since returned. Questioning his short-term future feels unfair to many, as he is genuinely a very good centre-back and probably the best in black-and-white since Jonathan Woodgate.
That comparison is steeped in irony, as Woodgate also suffered from injuries and, despite a move to Real Madrid, never had the career his ability deserved. Botman is hoped to be through the dark days of injuries, with a belief that he is not injury-prone but rather just unlucky. Yet the lasting negative impact an ACL can have on a player, particularly on their pace, cannot be overstated.
Thankfully, Botman's ability to read the game remains as good as ever, although mistakes have crept into his game. The hope will be that he can regain focus and find a consistent run of form, as performances against Liverpool and Hull City showed just how good he can be.
Podcast special on Botman's future
In a special episode of The Everything is Black and White Podcast, Andrew Musgrove and John Gibson dedicate an entire show to Botman. They ask whether the defender can ever return to the highs of the 2022-23 campaign, whether he can remould his game after injury, and perhaps more importantly in the short-term, whether he can keep Burn out of the side.
Speaking on the show when asked about what the future holds for Botman, Gibson said: "Sven has got a career ahead of him yet it's not going to be what it could have been but it can still be with a big club like Newcastle by readjusting his thinking, by perhaps accepting that you might be a squad player.
"A squad player these days plays a lot of football, especially if Newcastle get back into Europe - you play a lot of football. There is a future there for him and I wish him all the best because his potential [meant he could have been] phenomenal."
