FX has commissioned a limited series called Legends, a meta-series that will reunite the cast of Sons of Anarchy. The show is the brainchild of British actor Charlie Hunnam, who portrayed Jax Teller in the original series.
A summary for FX’s Legends, not to be confused with Netflix’s recent British drugs series, reads as per Variety: “When the cast of “Sons of Anarchy” reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.” As the logline suggests, this won’t be a follow-up to Sons of Anarchy but something falling in between fact and fiction.
Cast and creative team
The main cast of Sons of Anarchy are going to be returning for Legends, alongside Hunnam. These include Ron Perlman who played Clay Morrow, Katey Sagal who played Gemma Teller Morrow, Maggie Siff who played Tara, Mark Boone Junior who played Bobby, Tommy Flanagan who played Chibs, Kim Coates who played Tig, and Theo Rossi who starred as Juice. Further casting is expected to be announced at a later date.
Writer Jonathan Groff (not to be confused with the Mindhunter and Frozen actor), whose credits include How I Met Your Mother, Light Night with Conan O’Brien, and black-ish, will be working with Hunnam on the series. Hunnam and Groff will also serve as executive producers on the series.
FX television executive Nick Grad told the outlet: “When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision.” He added: “Charlie’s talents are on full display as a writer, performer and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know.”
Fan reactions and series legacy
The news has left many fans of the original elated and many have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to share their reactions. One person joked: “Is this a zombie apocalypse version since most of the characters are dead?” A second confused fan wrote: “I thought he died at the end of the show?” Yet a third fan echoed: “1/2 of the characters are dead? Are they zombies?” But a fourth posted: “I will absolutely watch the pilot for THAT.” While someone else said: “Sounds like a different TV show with the same cast most likely not Sons.”
Sons of Anarchy was created by Kurt Sutter and ran for seven seasons between 2008 and 2014. The show character the lives of an outlaw motorcycle club operating in the fictional town of Charming in California. Hunnam’s character Teller was the son of the founder of the Sons of Anarchy and began to question the gang after discovering a manifesto written by his late father. During its run, Sons of Anarchy received much praise from audiences and critics alike with an 87 percent fresh rating from reviewers and 91 percent from fans on the Popcornmeter.
It also racked up lots of awards and praise for its cast, with multiple Emmy nominations. Sons of Anarchy also walked away with accolades from Golden Globes, Satellite Awards, and Golden Reel Awards. The show’s success led to the follow up series Mayans M.C. that ran for five seasons and was set in the Sons of Anarchy universe, focusing on the Mayans Motorcycle Club.
Creator’s blessing and future plans
Sutter also had plans in the pipeline for more spin-offs, including a prequel series, First Nine, and a sequel that would focus on Jax’s sons. Although Sons of Anarchy creator Sutter isn’t involved in Legends, he is said to have given star Hunnam his blessing. Legends was apparently in the pipeline for three years, before FX picked it up.
Sons of Anarchy is streaming on Disney+ now.
