Alan Shearer will look back over 30 years of his football career in conversation with fellow striker Gary Lineker at a one-night-only event in London. The Newcastle United hero and Premier League's all-time leading scorer will be interviewed by Lineker as part of a 360° show at Lightroom on October 15.
Celebrating three decades since Newcastle signing
Shearer, 56, signed for his hometown club for a then-record £15m in 1996. The event forms part of his charity fundraising efforts. He told the Mirror: "It's hard to believe it's been 30 years since I signed for Newcastle. So much has happened in that time, and being able to look back over the last three decades, with Gary hosting in such an amazing venue, is going to be incredible."
Lineker will ask the Geordie legend about his time with England, his experiences with Kevin Keegan, and his favourite goals from the record 260 scored in the Premier League.
Supporting the Million Pound Mission
Shearer added: "What makes the night even more special for me is knowing it's also supporting the Million Pound Mission. I've been blown away by the response so far, and I'm incredibly honoured that people are getting behind the event and helping us raise money for a second hydrotherapy pool at the Alan Shearer Centre."
The centre in Newcastle, part of the charity St Cuthbert's Care, is the only charity-run facility in the North East providing specialist support completely free of charge. It helps people with profound disabilities, with more than 5,000 people able to access its facilities free of charge, including hydrotherapy and sensory play.
Raising funds for a second pool
Shearer said last year: "I was extremely lucky in my career. Scoring for England, captaining the team, winning the Premier League - this place beats all of that." He said of the event: "We know how important the pool is to members and their families, so every donation really does matter. I'm hugely grateful to everyone who has supported the event so far, and really looking forward to sharing it with everyone who'll be there."
The only way for fans to attend the Shearer: 30 years event is by entering the charity prize draw, which raises money for the Alan Shearer Foundation's Million Pound Mission. Twenty years ago, Shearer used money from his testimonial to create the centre, and he has already raised £7m to support its running costs. With membership now exceeding 10,000, demand has outgrown the existing hydrotherapy pool, and the £1m will fund the second pool.
