Argentinian media have delivered a harsh verdict on Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister after his performance in Argentina's 3-0 World Cup victory over Algeria. The 27-year-old played the full 90 minutes in Kansas City, but his display was described as sluggish and lightweight by several outlets.
Messi Dominates, Mac Allister Struggles
Lionel Messi predictably stole the headlines with a magnificent hat-trick, securing a commanding win for the reigning world champions. However, Mac Allister, who has endured a difficult season at Liverpool, was accused of failing to impose himself on the game. His long-term future at Anfield has been questioned, with his contract running until 2028. Despite links to Real Madrid and Manchester United, his father and agent Carlos has rejected any speculation of a departure.
Press Ratings
TyC Sports gave Mac Allister a 5 out of 10, stating: 'He looked somewhat awkward and struggled to find his rhythm alongside Enzo Fernandez at times. As the game progressed, he settled down a bit, though he never managed to be dominant, either in winning back possession or in orchestrating attacks.'
Ole was more generous with a 6 out of 10, noting: 'He unleashed a low, driven shot from outside the box, which goalkeeper Zidane parried into the path of Messi for the 2-0. He and Enzo combined perfectly in the centre circle, tackled fiercely, and arrived in the box to finish off every attack.'
La Nacion also gave a 6 out of 10, claiming Messi was supported by 'a solid second half from Alexis Mac Allister.' They added: 'Playing as a central midfielder, his contribution wasn't so much about winning back possessions. In the first half, a couple of Algerian dribblers caused him problems. When he found his rhythm, he made the difference: a header in the box, a shot on Messi's second goal, and an assist.'
Mac Allister's average fan score on La Nacion was 6.57. The midfielder will look to improve in Argentina's next group stage match as they aim to defend their World Cup title.
