Van der Bij wrote: "With broken hearts, we share the devastating news that our baby boy passed away during pregnancy. Thank you for your love and support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo. Forever loved. Forever our son." She added that after visiting a church to light a candle, they encountered a child named Elijah at a playground, which she described as "a beautiful sign from God" reminding them that their son is never far away.

Gakpo, who is currently representing the Netherlands at the World Cup in Texas, played in Thursday's 3-1 victory over Tunisia, which secured top spot in Group F. The couple had announced earlier this year that they were expecting their second child, joining their son Samuel.
