The Prince and Princess of Wales have emerged from Princess Kate's cancer battle with a stronger bond, according to royal sources. Kate was diagnosed with cancer in March 2024 and underwent preventative chemotherapy, announcing she was in remission in January 2025. The tumultuous experience reportedly brought the couple closer together.
Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment
In March 2024, Princess Kate stunned the world with the announcement that she had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing preventative chemotherapy. The bombshell health revelation saw her step back from royal duties for several months before confirming remission in January 2025.
During a visit to the Royal Marsden Hospital last year, Kate spoke openly about her cancer experience for the first time, sharing how she was adapting to a "new normal" while looking forward to a "fulfilling year ahead." She returned to royal duties with her trademark grace and commitment to the Firm.
Impact on the Couple
A source close to William and Kate told The Times earlier this year how the harrowing ordeal ultimately brought them closer. The friend said: "On a very human level, if you go through an experience like this, it changes you. And it can change you for the good. At heart, they're both good, proper people. While you'd never wish it upon them, it's made them stronger as a couple and stronger as individuals, with probably more wisdom than they had before."
The source added: "When your kids are young, you just barrel forward at great pace and everything is just about the growth of the family. And with this, you know, it's the obvious cliché, but it sort of stops you in your tracks."
Kate's Candid Reflections
During a visit to Colchester Hospital in Essex in July 2025, Kate spoke candidly about her cancer treatment, describing it as a "very scary, very daunting experience." She noted that there was an expectation for patients to "crack on, get back to normal."
She described the diagnosis as "life changing" and the treatment and recovery as a "rollercoaster," emphasizing the importance of a holistic "mind, body and spirit" approach. She confided to patients: "You put on a sort of brave face, stoicism through treatment. Treatment's done, then it's like 'I can crack on, get back to normal' but actually the phase afterwards is really difficult. You're not necessarily under the clinical team any longer but you're not able to function normally at home as you perhaps once used to. And actually someone to help talk you through that, show you and guide you through that sort of phase that comes after treatment I think is really valuable." She added: "You have to find your new normal and that takes time."
William's Perspective
Prince William also opened up about Kate's cancer battle in October 2025, speaking to Eugene Levy for his programme The Reluctant Traveller. He confessed to feeling "overwhelmed" by the health struggles affecting his family and how it had led him to "not great places."
He said: "You know life is sent to test us as well and it definitely can be challenging at times, and being able to overcome that is what makes us who we are. You know, I'm so proud of my wife and my father, for how they've handled all of last year. My children have managed brilliantly as well."
