John Goodman has showcased his impressive 200lb weight loss as he made a rare public appearance with his wife Anna Beth at the US premiere of his new film Digger on Monday, September 28.
The 74-year-old actor, who stars alongside Tom Cruise, Riz Ahmed and Jesse Plemons in the film, wore a navy suit while posing with Anna Beth, who donned a maroon dress and matching heels.
Long journey to sobriety
Goodman, who rose to fame for his role in Rosanne, has lost more than 14 stone after giving up drinking in 2007 and has remained sober ever since. He has previously credited Beth, his wife of 36 years, with being instrumental in helping him overcome his alcoholism.
Reflecting on his struggle, Goodman said: "It was 30 years of a disease that was taking its toll on everyone around me, and it had got to the point where, every time I did it, it was becoming more and more debilitating. It was life or death."
He added: "It was time to stop."
Health transformation
His weight loss was further aided after he cut sugar from his diet, hired a health coach, and worked out throughout the week. By 2023, he had lost most of the weight.
Goodman later told AARP that he considered the key to his successful weight loss to be "portion control".
"I was just shoving everything into my mouth," he said. "But I don't want to be an example to anybody when the weight comes thundering back on — when I start eating Crisco out of the can with a spoon and a side of confectioner's sugar."
New film role
Goodman has said that being obese has been "a waste", adding jokingly: "It takes a lot of creative energy to sit on your a** and figure out what you're going to eat next."
Goodman plays the President of the United States in Tom Cruise's new satirical film, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, which premieres in cinemas on Friday, October 2.
