A great-great-grandmother marked her 100th birthday surrounded by 100 guests at Peterlee Pavilion, with loved ones travelling from as far as Australia to join the celebration.
Lucy Clarke, born on July 26, 1926, in Haswell, County Durham, celebrated her centenary on Wednesday, July 29. Among the attendees were nine family members she had not seen for around 25 years, including her 85-year-old sister, who made the journey from Australia.
A Family Reunion Across the Miles
Lucy's son Ron described the occasion as "amazing," seeing his mother celebrate her birthday surrounded by family. Lucy grew up in Haswell with two brothers and five sisters, but only she and one sister remained in the UK. Her other sisters emigrated to Australia by boat, a journey that cost £10 at the time.
Her eldest son Brian, born in 1946, later followed his aunts to Australia but sadly passed away in 2008.
A Life of Work and Family
Lucy worked as a housemaid at a doctor's surgery and later did temporary nursing after moving to South Hetton. She then relocated to Hartlepool for a job at the steelworks, where she worked until her 30s. After that, she became a housewife to care for her four children: Brian, George (78), Ron (70), and Karen (68).
She lived in various parts of the North East, including Hordon and South Shields, before settling in Peterlee, where she has lived for over 20 years.
Reflections on a Long Life
Today, Lucy has eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. When asked about her secret to a long life, Ron said: "I have no idea. She used to drink and smoke, although she hasn't smoked for about 20 years now. All of her siblings have lived into their late 90s."
He added: "I've looked back on the family line through Ancestry and I've seen people in the 1700s living until they're 80, which was unbelievable in those days. People back then didn't live past about 60-year-old."
