Sunday night's Golden Globes ceremony was filled with memorable moments on screen, but behind the scenes, there was plenty of drama and humour that viewers at home missed. Comedian Nikki Glaser's opening monologue drew huge laughs and a few groans, particularly for her jab at Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, referencing their 'Rock, Paper, Scissors' antics from the Jumanji films. She also poked fun at Leonardo DiCaprio's dating history, quipping about his ability to achieve success before his girlfriend turned 30.
Dwayne Johnson almost missed the start of the show, walking in during the final countdown just a minute before air. Natasha Lyonne and Queen Latifah also arrived with seconds to spare. Noah Wyle cut it even closer, rushing back to his seat as his category was being announced, narrowly avoiding a repeat of Christine Lahti's infamous 1998 bathroom moment.
Teyana Taylor and Stellan Skarsgård both received standing ovations when their wins were announced, with Taylor earning a second ovation after her speech. Julia Roberts also received a lengthy standing ovation when she presented the award for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, as did the cast of Sinners when the film won for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
In the audience, Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav and Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos sat at adjacent tables, greeting each other warmly but keeping their distance during the ceremony. Sarandos joined the standing ovation for WB's Sinners win. As the night wore on, the bar area became increasingly crowded, with one nominee noting that 'half of the room is lost' two hours into the show.
Presenters Joe Keery and Charli XCX stayed on stage after announcing the Best Original Song winner to reveal the Original Score category during a commercial break. Jennifer Lopez danced on stage while the nominees clip played before announcing Timothée Chalamet as the winner. Jacob Elordi expressed embarrassment after being caught giving Guillermo del Toro the finger at a recent event, while Rose Byrne's younger brother George carried her train faithfully down the carpet and to the stage.
Notable absentees included Michelle Williams, who was performing in a play in Brooklyn; Gary Oldman, who was ill; and Cynthia Erivo, who missed the ceremony due to an upcoming commitment.
