Four common living room decor mistakes can make a home look cheap and tacky, according to interior designers, but each is simple to fix without a full renovation. The living room is a shared space where most guests spend time, so avoiding these errors can instantly make it feel more refined and thoughtfully designed.
Fake Architectural Decor
Adding architectural features can enhance a living room's value, but poor execution can compromise its appeal. Designer and founder of Colombe, Marta Chrapka, told Home and Gardens: "In my opinion, things that pretend to be something they are not or are fakes will look cheap in the living room."
She cited fireplace surrounds where no fireplace exists and wall panels that imitate stone as common examples, noting that "their cost is high, and the effect is cheap."
Wrong-Sized Rugs and Inconsistent Flooring
Home decorator Lauren from The Turquoise Home said a rug that is too small, or skipping one entirely, can leave a room feeling cold and disconnected. She recommended getting the largest size a room can handle so most furniture rests on it.
Jennifer Walter, owner and principal designer of Folding Chair Design Co., warned that inconsistent hard surface flooring such as LVT and laminate in different rooms makes a house look cheap. She advised keeping flooring consistent, noting that mixing an oak-coloured wood look in the kitchen with grey material in the living room "can be a disaster."
Overly-Themed Spaces
Interior designer Stefana Silber said no seasoned designer would suggest themed decor. She explained that a coastal look can be achieved without seashells and ocean pictures, recommending lighter shades of blue and white, plus materials like cotton, linen, driftwood and greenery to reflect the climate.
