Emmerdale producer Sophie Roper has teased what lies ahead for Charity Dingle, one of the soap's longest-serving characters, admitting the fan favourite "doesn't always learn" from her mistakes.
Charity, played by Emma Atkins, has endured decades of turmoil since her debut in 2000. She has been married four times, engaged seven, and was once framed for murder by a husband, leading her to give birth to her third child behind bars. Her history also includes affairs with multiple cousins, one of whom she had a baby with.
Latest storyline sees Charity confess to murder
Her current storyline sees her confess to the murder of Dr. Todd, played by Caroline Harker. Viewers know Charity is not responsible, but she takes the blame to protect her granddaughter Sarah, portrayed by Katie Hill. Charity had given Todd money as a down payment before the situation escalated.
Speaking about the latest trauma in Charity's life, Roper said: "There's almost nothing that she's not gone through."
Blackmail and assault in dark plot
Viewers recently saw Charity give birth to baby Leyla after cheating on her husband Mack, played by Lawrence Robb. She lies, claiming Leyla is Sarah's biological daughter, but secrets in soaps rarely stay hidden. Charity soon found herself being blackmailed by Dr. Todd, leading to a dark storyline in which Charity was sexually assaulted by the character.
Roper attributes Charity's constant suffering partly to Atkins' talent, saying: "Emma is so brilliant, so of course, [storyline-wise] she has to have everything."
Why Charity remains a fan favourite
Despite her flaws and questionable decisions, Charity remains a favourite among viewers. Twenty-six years after her debut, she is still one of the show's main faces, which Roper credits to her relatability.
"Emma continues to bring such brilliance to the screen, but I think the joy of a character like Charity is that she grows, she doesn't always learn. She's absolutely made similar mistakes over the year, but she grows as a person," Roper said.
Roper said the team "relish" having a character like Charity on the soap and hope to keep finding "brilliant stories" for her. She added: "There is so much more I would love to learn about a character, to see her tackle as an actor on the show. So it's pressure on us [writers and producers] really, to make sure we can keep finding those brilliant and dynamic stories for her."
