Country music legend Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80, her family has confirmed. The news comes shortly after the singer cancelled fan events due to poor health.
Nephew announces passing
Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, announced the passing of the country music icon in an emotional video tribute. Describing the star as a beloved aunt, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, Bryan said Dolly had been welcomed by "the arms of Jesus".
Fans across the world have been quick to pay tribute to the beloved star, including many celebrities. Ozzy Osbourne's daughter Kelly shared an emotional tribute alongside photos of herself with Dolly and her son.
Stars remember Dolly's legacy
Kelly Osbourne wrote: "Dolly, thank you for paving the way. Not only for women in music, but for women everywhere to be unapologetically themselves. You showed us that we could be ambitious and kind, strong and soft, fearless and authentic." She added: "One of the greatest honors of my life was getting to work with you. Your legacy reaches far beyond music. Through your philanthropy, generosity, and commitment to literacy and education, you changed countless lives and made the world a better place."
British singer Paloma Faith said: "Rest in peace wonderful Dolly Parton. You were one of the greatest ever to do it!... Thank you for the inspiration and may you be singing in heaven with all the greats."
Julia Roberts, who starred with Parton in Steel Magnolias, shared: "Dolly was a magical and joyous human. I hold knowing her as a treasure in my life. The sun has dimmed today."
Political figures pay respects
US President Donald Trump said American flags throughout the United States will be lowered for one week beginning on Tuesday evening in honour of Dolly Parton. In a post on Truth Social, he said: "This is a true loss for millions of people. There has never been anyone like her, and never will. Rest in Peace, Dolly! The World loves you."
Former US president Bill Clinton said Dolly Parton was "one of a kind—a great songwriter and performer who told the stories of everyday Americans with honesty, humility, and heart". He added: "She rose high from her East Tennessee roots and never forgot where she came from. And she always believed in giving back, especially in her efforts to promote literacy."
United States Senator Bernie Sanders added: "Dolly Parton was one of the great entertainers of our era." In a post on X he said: "She was not only a talented musician & songwriter, but a lifelong philanthropist and advocate for literacy, education, LGBTQ+ rights, healthcare and disaster relief. Her music and humanity touched millions. She will be sorely missed."
Health struggles before death
Just days before her death was announced, Dolly Parton revealed she had neglected her own wellbeing while caring for her husband in the period leading up to his death last year. Earlier this month Dolly shared a health update and said she was working on focusing on her fitness after pulling out of an event at Dollywood due to poor health. In the aftermath of the cancelled appearance, she issued an update on her health in a new interview, sharing: "I am dealing with some health issues that I just didn’t pay attention to when I was watching over Carl."
