Princess Diana believed her marriage to the then-Prince Charles would have lasted if one thing had been different, according to royal expert and editor Ingrid Seward, a friend of the late princess.
Seward, speaking on Hello! magazine's live episode of “A Right Royal Podcast,” said Diana told her: “Diana also said to me she thought if they'd met when they were older, they probably would have made it work and conquered the world; that's what she loved to say.”
Charles's guilt and Diana's love
Seward said of Charles: “He did love her.” She added: “He may not have loved her in the very beginning, and he may not have loved her by the end, but he felt so bad that he couldn't make the marriage work.”
She said Charles “was plagued by guilt because he knew he was the one who should have made it work. But her intense jealousy and many, many other things...they were just not suited at the time.”
Seward also revealed: “She actually told me that she really loved Charles. He was the one she would always love.”
Emotional moment on divorce day
In the documentary The Royal Family at War, Seward said that “Diana did tell me something quite interesting. She said that on the day of the divorce, she and Charles sat down together on the sofa, and they both cried.”
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told In Style: “It seems once Charles and Diana accepted that their marriage was over, they both did have a natural feeling of sadness.
“But there was also a lot of mutual exhaustion after fighting their relationship battle in public for so many years that might have just caused this emotional moment.”
Later marriage and family
Princess Diana married then-Prince Charles in 1981, and the pair divorced 15 years later. Now-King Charles married now-Queen Camilla in 2005 in an intimate ceremony with only 28 guests, including Prince Harry and Prince William.
The couple had met decades before their wedding. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip did not attend, but they held a reception for the couple. Today, they have been married for over two decades.
