The disclosure comes as Harry and Meghan are said to be gearing up to spend a prolonged period in the UK with their children, Archie and Lilibet, putting fresh focus on the Duke's relationships with some of his old British friends.
Reported return to Britain
According to BBC News, the Sussexes are believed to have flown from California on a private jet, with speculation suggesting their return is tied to plans for their children to attend British schools from September. Their reported return to Britain has also thrown the spotlight onto Harry's past friendships, including his bond with football legend David Beckham.
According to Alison Boshoff's book Brand Beckham, the duo became close during the early stages of their friendship, frequently socialising together in London, reports the Express. The Mirror reports that Harry and David enjoyed a couple of late-night visits to the Arts Club in Chelsea around late 2011 and early 2012. Boshoff characterises these occasions as "heavy drinking sessions that went on until around 3 a.m."
They were also part of a broader social circle that included James Corden, Edward Enninful, Idris Elba, Matthew Freud, Nick Jones and Markus Anderson. Their bond continued as the Beckhams became more closely connected to the Cotswolds. David purchased a farmhouse near the Soho House estate in the region, while Harry and Meghan also became frequent guests at Soho Farmhouse, a venue that played a significant role during the initial stages of their romance.
Rift and Invictus Games snub
David and Victoria seemed to develop a strong friendship with the Sussexes. The pair attended Harry and Meghan's 2018 wedding, while the two families maintained contact after the Sussexes leased a property in Great Tew, near the Beckhams' residence. However, the relationship was subsequently reported to have shifted dramatically.
Boshoff alleges the Beckhams were essentially frozen out after Meghan grew worried that someone within their broader social circle was passing information about her and Harry to journalists. The reported rift reached a particularly uncomfortable moment later that year, when David and his family travelled to Australia during the Invictus Games.
Beckham had apparently hoped to see Harry during the visit, but according to Boshoff's version of events, the anticipated encounter never materialised. She states that David was "astonished" after Harry was unavailable, leaving the former England skipper without the meeting he had expected.
Current state of the friendship
The pair have not completely disappeared from each other's social circles, though. Brand Beckham characterises their relationship as "good enough", and they were brought back together in 2024 when Harry attended a football match in Miami involving a team owned by Beckham. Despite that meeting, Boshoff suggests the tight bond they once enjoyed has not been rebuilt.
The allegations have emerged at a potentially crucial juncture for Harry and Meghan, who are reportedly gearing up for an extended return to Britain six years after stepping down as working royals and subsequently making their home in the US. The Cotswolds has been floated as one potential location for the family, potentially placing the Sussexes back in the same part of England where their friendship with the Beckhams once thrived.
