The 'Life in the UK' test is a mandatory step for migrants seeking Indefinite Leave to Remain or naturalisation as a British citizen. It consists of 24 questions that can be challenging even for those who have lived in the country their entire lives.
Test Requirements and Statistics
According to the Office for National Statistics, 813,000 people immigrated to the UK in the year ending December 2025. To be eligible for the test, applicants must have no criminal convictions, have lived in the UK for the required length of time, and demonstrate English language proficiency by passing a language test.
The test covers topics such as history, customs, and culture. Candidates have 45 minutes to complete the 24 questions. While the exam can be retaken as many times as needed, each attempt costs £50, so passing on the first try is advisable to avoid accumulating fees.
Pass Mark and Quiz Challenge
To pass, candidates must answer 18 out of 24 questions correctly, which is 75%. Results are given immediately upon completion, so there is no waiting period to find out how you performed.
